In the area of Research and Investigation, the Redleaf Group has once again demonstrated its commitment to excellence. Our latest example in the field of Cultural Heritage and Native Title assessments showcases our expertise in uncovering the past while safeguarding the future.

BACKGROUND

When a Regional Council sought expertise to conduct a groundbreaking archaeological investigation, Redleaf Cultural Heritage was the natural choice. Committed to upholding the spirit of the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003 and the Native Title Act 1993, our journey began.

Prior to this, our dedicated team conducted a Cultural Heritage and Native Title Duty of Care Assessment, revealing grinding grooves etched into the exposed sandstone bedrock. The Council had earmarked the bridge for replacement, necessitating a rigorous examination of this heritage-rich site.

Our primary objective was to trace the origins of these enigmatic grooves. Were they the handiwork of Aboriginal ancestors or the result of mechanical intervention? This was our challenge, and we were ready to meet it head-on.

METHODS

Our discovery was marked by precision and innovation. We meticulously measured the groove dimensions – length, thickness, and width between marks. Scrutinising visual cues such as directionality, quantity, parallel lines, and resemblances to other marks, we endeavoured to unlock the secrets of their creation.

We were able to draw sharp contrasts in the length and width of individual grooves within distinct groupings. This rigorous statistical analysis enabled us to differentiate between Aboriginal grinding grooves and the imprints of modern machinery, with width and length measurements as our guiding lights.

FINDINGS

The investigation reached a conclusion. The grooves, with their rich heritage and ancestral significance, were unequivocally confirmed to be of Aboriginal origin.
